Mykonos in April

Whenever I thought of Mykonos, the first things that came to my mind are beautiful white houses with blue windows and …. party scene.

Even though I would have liked to visit this “island of the winds” and see the white houses with blue windows, image of a crowded little town buzzing with party lovers was just something that I couldn’t get out of my head, and so I have marked it as one of the places I would never visit.

However, earlier this year when my sister suggested that we visit out of season… the idea of a few days on this beautiful Greek island in the Aegean Sea all of sudden appealed to me.

We flew out beginning of April, and already from the airplane saw the beauty of colour palette awaiting for us.

The hotel we chose is Harmony Boutique Hotel, right by the sea and only a short walk away from the old town.

Everything seemed so close in Mykonos, and so the same route became our daily 10 minute walk to the restaurants and “Little Venice” part of the town.

Each step felt like an unhurried discovery and just above the old town, we found the line of the 16th century windmills that are the iconic image I always associated with Mykonos.

What surprised me is how many churches we saw…. they are everywhere. Every few steps we would see one, tiny churches, on the streets, what felt behind each corner, as well as in people’s yards…. many times even two next to each other.

You could tell that the island was getting ready for the upcoming season as the locals were busy freshening up the white paint on the houses and streets, and the shop owners preparing their shops for the influx of tourists.

Many of the shops were closed, but that didn’t really matter to us as shopping was not why we came, and the beauty of narrow streets and good food kept us entertained for the few days we were there.

And so we walked, we ate, and enjoyed surprises hiding at every little bend.

For me, three days was just the right amount of time to soak in the beauty of this little town while it’s still asleep…. and I’m so happy I did.
